School Wildlife Area and Pond

A secondary school in Neath has a small area of scrub and woodland adjoining it’s playing fields.   The headmaster recently met with Peter Hill and it was agreed that the site has the makings of an interesting project that could achieve two prime objectives;

  1. Vastly improving habitat for biodiversity, particularly herpetofauna and odonata.
  2. Raising awareness of ecology, biodiversity and conservation matters among young people through their direct active involvement in the project.

The area did previously hold a pond that has long ago matured into little more than a slightly damp overgrown patch.   West Glamorgan ARG advised that the creation of another pond (or preferably a series of small ponds) and a management plan for the area would improve the habitat for biodiversity.   A contractor has been sourced to undertake the initial excavation work, funding has been provided from Mentro Allan through CCW, and additional funding is available from NPTCBC Biodiversity unit.

Work is planned to begin in the New Year.
